About Bath Spa University
Often known as the University of Bath, the Bath Spa University is a public institution of higher education and research. The institution was established as the Bath School of Art in the year 1852 as a result of the 1851 Great Exhibition. In 1975, two institutions of higher education merged to form the Bath College of Higher Education. In 1983, Bath Academy of Art joined the merged body. It was in the year 1992 that the institution was granted the power to award degrees followed by a name change in 1995. The institution transformed into a university in 2005 and adopted its current name in the same year.
The main campus of Bath Spa University is located at Newton Park, about 3 ¹⁄₂ miles west of the centre of the city. This is the largest and oldest site of the institution. The beautiful campus features state-of-the-art academic buildings that house smart classrooms, laboratories and workstations equipped with modern technology and high-tech equipment. The University Library remains open 24 hours and holds a wide collection of resources in printed and digital forms to be accessed by both the faculty members and the students. The campus features many recreational areas for students to just relax and indulge in various extra-curricular activities. Bath Spa University is set in beautiful grounds, leased by the Duchy of Cornwall, Prince Charles. The surroundings epitomizes the traditional English countryside with farmland surrounding the campus. Don’t be surprised to hear the sound of cows mooing and see swans elegantly swimming around the lake. , The university has other campuses in the city of Bath, and one at Corsham Court in Wiltshire.
Bath Spa University offers pre-degree study, undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees in a wide range of programmes. Campuses can be found at Newton St. Loe, Sion Hill and Corsham Court.
Bath is a World Heritage City (one of only three cities in the world to be on UNESCO’s World Heritage List) with striking views, beautiful parks and iconic architecture. The Roman Baths date back almost 2,000 years and can still be visited today.
Regular ninety-minute train services run directly into central London and Bristol is only ten minutes away by train, offering connections to the rest of the UK. Bath is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with the Cotswolds, the Mendips and the Wye Valley all within easy reach. The west of England is the UK’s most popular tourist destination.
Bath Spa University is home to just over 7,500 students from over 40 different countries. This relatively small size means that Bath Spa remains a personal and intimate university with strong focus on teaching and student welfare. Student satisfaction is currently 81% across all subjects, while teaching is rated 90% positive. The university has eight schools that offer a range of full-time and part-time educational programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The students can pursue their degrees in various disciplines of business, art, humanities, design, music, creative industries, performing arts, sciences and education. Apart from this, the institution offers various short courses and distance learning programmes. The university is a vast community of different nationalities and cultures, with about 18,676 students from 130 countries of the world. The student population consists of 53% of males and 47% females. The international students contribute to 30% of the total student body. The institution has skilled, experienced and responsible staff on the roll, which includes academic affiliates, administrative officers and helping staff.
The Student Support Service can offer advice on immigration procedures, travel, accommodation and other information that may be required. The service also offers pre-departure briefings, visa support and an international orientation week at arrival. The Student Union has a dedicated International Student Representative and trips to London and events such as film nights and parties are organised by the International Relations office.
